From the moment you opened the programme for this production of Graham Greene’s Travels with My Aunt you sensed that you were in for something different, creative and, possibly ‘off the wall’.  Creative Cow certainly lived up to their reputation with this imaginative version of Giles Havergal’s proclaimed adaptation.  The programme, cleverly designed to resemble a British passport, gives an inkling of just what might be in store.  There are four actors; and not only do these four cover all the characters in the story, they all play the main two – namely Henry Pulling and his septuagenarian Aunt Agatha – and mostly at the same time!  Confusing?  Perhaps not as much as might be expected.

It was a huge audience at the theatre for this first night of their UK tour and expectations were high – and in the main the audience was not to be disappointed.  With a clever use of props – notably a pair of pink glasses to show which actor was playing Aunt Agatha – and a fast moving dialogue you quickly became attuned with how this play was to be performed.  The four actors – all dressed the same – were on stage for the whole two hours – in itself a gruelling feat. That, coupled with having to wrestle with the many props that were secreted away in pockets and behind the enormous bar that formed the set, made it amazing that this was just the first night of the tour!

What a pleasure it was to welcome the four actors, their Director, Amanda Knott, and Giles Havergal (the play’s adaptor) and other members of the company to the theatre bar for a well earned drink following their first night performance. Despite the stresses of the day, they all gave so freely of their time and chatted to the Friends gathered in the bar to meet them.

It had been a different take on this well-known story, but generally the vibes were positive and we wish them all tremendous success as they travel around the country on their tour!
